“American Fiction” is a 2023 dark comedy-drama film. Adapted from Percival Everett’s 2001 novel “Erasure,” the story revolves around a disillusioned novelist-professor who pens a satirical take on stereotypical“Black”literature, only to have it mistakenly lauded as serious art, leading to both commercial success and critical acclaim. Specifically, American Fiction is a satire of the way the literary and film institutions promote works that reinforce stereotypes around drugs, poverty, and violence in the Black community. American Fiction received praise from the American Film Institute, naming it one of the top 10 films of 2023, as well as multiple nominations at the 96th Academy Awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay award.
