Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine star in a late-in-life romantic comedy as a grumpy old man and a somewhat dotty old lady. Elsa describes her life in terms of exaggerated, outrageous adventures. She awakens in Fred a desire to re-engage inlife. The movie is a valentine to Fellini’s La Dolce Vita in which the oldsters re-enact a famous scene in the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The film has its usual complement of younger characters who treat Elsa and Fred with condescension, posing as concern. We found the movie to be funny, sad, and heartwarming all in one. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out if Elsa, as she claims, was actually painted by Picasso.
