Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime drama directed and co-produced by Martin Scorsese. When oil fields were discovered under their reservation, the Osage Indians became some of the wealthiest people in the world. However, there was a catch: the Osage were not free to spend their own money. The U.S. government put a system of guardianship in place, under which any Osage who was deemed "incompetent" was assigned a guardian (almost always a white man) who controlled their money. The system often resulted in guardians withholding or outright stealing money from the Osage. The movie is based on a book of the same name by David Grann. Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone lead the ensemble cast. At the center of this story is a slew of unsolved murders, then called the “Reign of Terror,” that tormented the Osage from 1921 to 1926, and the corresponding emergence of a Bureau of Investigation (the eventual FBI) that finally arrived to determine who was doing the murdering.
