Televisions, along with computers and some other electronics (covered devices), can no longer be disposed of with municipal waste under the Covered Devices Recycling Act of 2010. Many of these electronics contain mercury, lead, arsenic, chromium and other potentially hazardous substances. In addition to keeping these toxic substances from contaminating groundwater when landfilled, it is less expensive to recycle than to mine rare earth minerals used in the manufacturing.
